Retired Adventurers, Banshees, and the dangers of the Triboar Trail

Image
Brief DM Summary: Jig and Triactis had a chat with Sildar Hallwinter at the Stonehill Inn. He offers 500 gold to the group if they sort out what's going on at Cragmaw Castle and take care of the goblin problem (and find out what happened to Gundren). He also discusses another matter with them privately. Ashildr soon joins the group at the bar and has a chat with Daran Edermath when he comes in. The retired elven adventurer tells her about reports of undead coming out of the area around Old Owl Well and gives her a bit of history -- he's concerned that something untoward is going on there and is hoping the fine adventurers he's been hearing about can go take a look if they are out that way. He's happy to see the changes already coming about in town after the removal of the Redbrands. Ashildr, Triactis and Jig head off to visit Agatha the banshee to see if they can get an answer to Sister Garaele's question about Bowgentle's lost spellbook. On the way through the

A Visit from the Faerie Queen

Image
(As told by Billykins Boomwacket) Clutching his new shield (made from the bones of his enemies, the Twig Blights) to his chest as he falls asleep that night, Billykin is visited by a wondrous vision -- The Faerie Queen herself.  "You have been quite brave, little sprite," she says. "I think that deserves a reward, don't you?"  When he awakes the next morning, he feels quite spry (HP doubled from 6 to 12).

Ashildr's Pouch

Image
That night, after clearing out the Redbrand Hideout, Ashildr fell into a deep sleep. She awoke at some point, sure that she'd heard her mother's voice calling to her. It wasn't until she rolled over, trying to find a more comfortable spot on the bed, that she noticed that the pouch she had carried all these years had come open -- and a soft, comforting light was leaking from the inside. With shaking hands, she opened it and found... A necklace of prayer beads. They were both delicate and strong, making a slight tink, tink noise as they clinked together. And touching them gave her a feeling of home that she hadn't felt since she had left.  --- The 6 beads on the necklace include 2 Blessing, 2 Curing, 1 Wind Walking, 1 Smiting. Requires Attunement by a Cleric, Druid, or Paladin This necklace has 6 magic beads made from aquamarine, black pearl, or topaz. It also has many nonmagical beads made from stones such as amber, bloodstone, citrine, coral, jade, pearl, or quartz. I

Current Rumours & Quests

Image
The following are the current jobs and quests and locations the players have knowledge of: Shrine of Luck Quest from Sister Garaele -- find out the location of Bowgentle's spellbook from Agatha, a banshee (Agatha's Lair, Near Conybery) The Ruins of Thundertree, known to have been once overrun with undead. You know from Qelline that this is where Reidoth the Druid lives (who is reputed to know the location of Ossian's Family Sword) and, from the woman you saved from the Redbrand Hideout, you know there is a valuable emerald necklace there. Orcs at Wyvern Tor, Harbin Wester the Townmaster offers 100 gold to the group that takes care of this problem Cragmaw Castle -- you know this is where Gundren Rockseeker was taken as well as his map to the location of Wave Echo Cave [ ahem YOU MIGHT WANT TO TALK TO SILDAR ABOUT THIS] Halia Thornton, who soon learns of your victory over the Redbrands as all of Phandalin is celebrating, sends a note that she'd like Jig to come pick up

No More Hideaway...

Image
[DM Summary] With Droop's help, the players free the captives (The Woodcutter's Family), Kill Glasstaff & discover his true identity (Iarno Albreck, the missing wizard Sildar was looking for), and kill all of the remaining Redbrand Ruffians. Arianwen and Pili Pala take the prisoners back right away, which cheers everyone in the village. Following behind soon after, Ashildr, Ossian, Triactis, Jig, and Sherick even take a pile of the red cloaks back with them and start a bonfire outside the Stonehill Inn, where all the villagers celebrate. Sildar is upset at Iarno's treachery, but rewards the players for their part in bringing him to justice. He plans on staying on and taking Iarno's place -- that is, the job that Iarno was supposed to have done -- helping Phandalin become a safe place to live again. Afterwards, they visit The Shrine of Luck and meet Sister Garaele of the hard to pronounce name. She asks if they'd be able to convince a banshee named Agatha to tel

The Redbrand Hideout -- Mission: Infiltration!

Image
DM Summary : After some discussion the next morning (after a well-rested Triactis, Ashildr, and Ossian come down) and a hearty breakfast, the group decides to take the tunnel entrance that Carp Alderleaf showed them into the Redbrand hideout. Before they leave, Sildar tells them about Iarno Albreck having been seen near there right before he disappeared 2 months before. He asks them to keep an eye out for information on the wizard.  They set off and don their red capes (Jig having fished one more out of the bin outside Stonehill Inn -- it was torn and smelled awful, but it was a red cape) before going in. They find themselves in a cavern.  A crevasse divides it and is flanked by two rough stone columns that support the twenty-foot-high ceiling. Two arched wooden bridges span the chasm. It doesn't take long for them to realise that the "big eye monster" is a telepathic nothic. However, they are able to distract him with leftover bits of breakfast.  They explore down a ha

The Sleeping Giant

Image
DM Summary :  It’s mid-morning and the sun is shining brightly. The haze of the previous day has been burned off. After having spent the previous night in a raucous singing (and drinking) competition, Ossian, Ashildr, and Triactis are sleeping in. Jig (and Pili Pala’s sprite friend Billykin Boomwacket) had already gone off to take the ox cart and supplies around to both Lionshield Coster and Barthen’s Provisions and were back having a late breakfast. They are joined by Sherick, Sildar (who looks much better now), and Arianwen.  Jig tells the others about how she had to take care of a Redbrand Ruffian while collecting the pay from Elmar Barthen at Barthen's Provisions. As they are eating and chatting, a crying Pip Stonehill (the innkeeper's son) and they soon learn that he's distraught because one of his friends had been taken by the Redbrands (along with his mother and sister, on top of his father being presumed dead).  Jig, Arianwen, and Sherick travel around Phandalin and

The Invisible Sprite Spy

Image
After not learning as much from Harbin Wester, the Townmaster, as they wanted, Jig asked Billykin to stay invisible and hang around the Townmaster's Hall for a while to see what he could find out. So far, he has discovered: Sildar had interviewed some townspeople and discovered that the wizard he is seeking, Iarno Albreck, was last seen about two months ago near Tresendar Manor. Billykin : That Sildar looked awfully concerned about that! Ya might want to ask him about it! Bob the Villager came by to talk to Harbin Wester in his office and told him that something had happened at the Sleeping Giant. Billykin : Ya shoulda seen the fat fool! He nearly spit all over himself and started in moanin' about how he just wants things quiet! A couple of prospectors came in to complain to Harbin Wester about the orcs at Wyvern Tor.  Billykin : They was steamed! They lit into ol' Harbin and gave him what for! It was all I could do to not laugh!

Billykins regales Pili Pala with a tale, over breakfast

Image
As recounted to Pili Pala, by her old friend Billykins Boomwacket, while he slurps soup at the tavern, and she struggles to get a word in edgeways: Ah Pili Pala, that Jig thinks she’s the stealthy sort, but still managed to scare the brasspockets out of her when I snuck up behind her at Lionshield Coster. Yes, indeed, was on my way to find you once I’d heard there was a corgi-riding sprite just arrived in town with a crowd of adventurers,  who else could it be? And then I see my good friend Jig, so I put two and two together...Ah it’s good to see you! So, Jig was done with Linene at Lionshield Coster in jig time (geddit?) and sounded like there was some craic to be had at Barthen’s so I followed along, but thought I may as well stay out of sight after hearing about those Redbrands, and wasn’t I right?  I’ll tell ya, soon as that Elmar fellow fetched the purse for Jig, a coarse-looking lad name of Redbrand Ruffian turned up, and fancied he was going to have the gold off Elmar. Quite the

Yeemik's Worst Nightmare & Arrival in Phandalin

Image
Brief DM Summary : After a short rest, Arianwen sent Pili Pala to collect Ashildr & ask her to move the ox cart as close as possible so that the stolen Lionshield Coster supplies could be loaded on board. While the druid kept herself busy loading the cart, everyone else explored the last bit of Cragmaw Hideout. They soon discovered the goblin's kitchen (if it could be called that). While they didn't manage to surprise the goblins inside, Sherick's blinding radiance took all but one out in one brilliant glow.  Yeemik, the last remaining goblin, attempted to bargain with Sildar's life, for the Lords Alliance member was there and just barely clinging to consciousness. Cowed by both the light and Triactis, as well as the dragonborn looming over him, he spills everything he knows and even translates the note that Jig had found: King Grol, the goblin king, had sent instructions to Klarg for the clan to be on the lookout for Gundren Rockseeker the dwarf. Once found, they w

Ashildr's Dream

Image
Ashildr climbed into the ox cart and settled down to wait for the others to return. The battle with the goblins had been short but bloody -- or, more properly, very goblin bits-y. But now the sun was shining and the day looked clear and bright. It wasn't long before she fell asleep.  As she slept, she dreamed... She was seated in front of a familiar fireplace. Home. The smell of roasting meat permeated the room and she heard the sizzling of fat as it dripped off the spit and onto the coals below. And next to her -- Mam, her wild hair half-tamed and her tusks gleaming in the firelight. "Ashildr," said her mother in the dream, "you are almost ready. I can sense the power in you. You make me proud, my child. Soon, soon you can claim your birthright." Ashildr reached out a hand to her mother, but wispy smoke swirled into her eyes and she blinked back tears. She awoke, the smell of smoke still in her nose, her mind on the leather pouch that she always carried with he

The Triboar Trail & Cragmaw Hideout

Image
DM Summary : The rest of Gundren's supplies had arrived and been loaded onto the wagon. Yulia, feeling unsure of herself and having found a menter in the Archmage Unwin, decides to stay on at the Wyrmspine to see if she can learn more from the master before venturing out into the wilds of the Swordcoast. Before everyone else leaves to travel on to Phandalin, Unwin pulls Ossian aside: "You're a Firebrand, aren't you? I met one of your kin once, many years ago. I've heard rumours that the family sword was misplaced. If that's true, I advise you to seek out the druid near Phandalin. He might have some good news for you." With Triactis driving the wagon, since he had been to Phandalin before (the Stonehill Inn was one of his regular stops), they left. The trip was uneventful along the High Road, but after they had turned off onto the Triboar Trail and come around a bend, they spotted two dead horses in the road, riddled with arrows. The saddlebags had been loo

Wolves, Skeletons & Dead Bards, Oh my!

Image
(DM Summary) After getting rid of the rats and the giant spider and spending some time carousing (which Jig put to good use in helping the lonely Bark Shinbone sort out his love life), everyone retires to their (free!) room to get a good night’s sleep and have a long rest (except for Arianwen, who has a brief midnight wander through the city streets).  The next morning you awake to a filling (also free) breakfast… A dwarf, who has spent most of his time in the Wyrmspine sitting at a corner table with an experienced looking human fighter, approaches you. “Heya! I’m Gundren. Gundren Rockseeker. I been watchin’ yer exploits here and I think yer just the kind of folk we need, me and Sildar.” He nods towards Sildar, who nods back affirmatively. “It’s a simple enough job—just a delivery to Phandalin—but once yer there, we might have some more work for ye.” He grins broadly and rubs his hands together. “Me and me brothers…we’re workin’ on somethin’ big, ye see. Verrrry big!” “Anyway, we’ll pa

A Walk at Night

Image
(DM Summary) Unable to sleep after all the carousing and celebration, Arianwen decides to clear her head by taking a wander outside in the night air. Pili Pala comes along, loathe to let her druid friend out on her own late at night on the city streets. The streets are quiet and deserted. As Arianwen walks, she hears some snoring from a house nearby but otherwise, all is very quiet. Maybe too quiet? The druid listens closely. She doesn't see anything, but she does hear a scuffle of feet against the stone pavement to the east, perhaps around the corner of the house. As Arianwen turns in that direction, the noise stills, rather like someone is trying to be quiet. Curious, the druid and Pili Pala continue in the direction of the noise. A hooded figure steps out of the shadows. "Heya," says the woman with a grin, "You're out awfully late." It's hard to make out her face under the cover of her dark cloak.  "My sprite likes late night walks," says Ar

Everyone Needs Love

Image
(Jig's Account, +75 xp) Bark Shinbone, a Half-Orc of few words but a lot of heart. Vaulting up on to a bar stool with surprising agility, Jig accepted a mug of foaming Dwarven ale from Bark who looked grimly ahead. Perhaps helping him wasn’t going to be within her purview after all.  “So, what brings you here?” she asked, when what she actually meant was “Why am I here, and just where are all the exits, because you look like you’d turn mean faster than a copper piece flips,” as she eyed the scars criss-crossing Bark’s broad arms. “You good with words, yes?" “Indubitably, it is true. I mean, yes, yes I am," Jig said, a tiny balloon of pride rising inside, then bursting into flames when she recognised that Bark seemed to have issues with words of more than two syllables.   “Bark need help."  He pointed to the yellowed parchment posted above the bar. "Someone good with word." Jig sidled in closer, and kept her voice low.  “Tell me more. Is it something dangero

The Accidental Formation of a Party

Image
(Sherick's Account, +75xp) It was a typical day at the Wyrmspine Tavern. Unwin Inkwell welcomed all of the guests while his granddaughter Wylla took orders around the room. The bald and rather scarred Trimble was tending the bar. There is a message board above the bar with 2 notes: • Bartender Challenge: Make Me Laugh! I dare you! • Exterminator Help Wanted – Please see Bartender or Wylla Inkwell  A small half dwarf/half elf patron named Triactis notices the messages and tells Trimble a joke, the first one landed flat but he tried again and got a belly laugh this time. Triactis downs the drink and finds himself feeling fleet of foot. About the same time Wylla yells out "Who here wants to help exterminate a few wee beasties!" A few patrons gather around and Wylla continues, “We’re having a bit of a rat infestation in the storerooms. Not sure how many are in there, but if you kill them, I’ll be more than happy to pay you 100 gold for your trouble. Or, if you’re not need

On the Road to Wyrmspine...

Image
(DM Summary) Sherick , an Aasimar Cleric, had recently traveled to Neverwinter after drifting somewhat aimlessly for a time. One morning, she awoke from a vision, a breathy voice still echoing in her head:  "Your journey begins under the Wyrm's spine. Find the dwarf, but only when you are ready."  After asking around & listening for any mentions of wyrms or dragons, she met a young half-elf bard named Triactis who was on his way to a tavern he frequented just south of Neverwinter called the Wyrmspine Tavern. She's not entirely sure if this is the place she is meant to go, but she thinks it is worth a look. She and Triactis departed for Wyrmspine, but along the way they ran into a couple of Twig Blights, which they handily dispatched without much trouble. But as they traveled farther down the road, they came across a body covered in spider webs. Before they had time to check for a pulse, a Giant Spider leapt out of a nearby tree and attacked them. It was a brief b
